Experience
Hanno F. Kaiser is an antitrust lawyer with a special focus on Internet and technology markets. He has represented clients before the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the European Commission, and the German Federal Cartel Office in transactions involving, for example, search engines, online advertising, content distribution, online auctions, operating systems, proprietary and open source enterprise software, chip design and standard setting. In addition, Mr. Kaiser has extensive experience in medical devices and the interplay of FDA regulation and the merger control process. In the “bricks and mortar” world, Mr. Kaiser has recently advised casino companies, supermarkets, clean energy firms, and a variety of financial institutions, trade associations and hedge funds in various national and international proceedings.
Mr. Kaiser’s clients include Oracle Corporation, Apple Inc., Yahoo! Inc., eBay Inc., Broadcom Corporation, Creative Commons, The Hearst Corporation, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., Thoratec Corporation, McKesson Corporation, Gen-Probe Incorporated, the Carlyle Group, and the Loan Syndications and Trading Association.
Mr. Kaiser holds law degrees from the University of Bayreuth (Germany) and the University of California at Davis. For his Ph.D. thesis on the philosophy of criminal justice (University of Bonn, summa cum laude), Mr. Kaiser received scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) and the Bucerius Law Program. In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious Prize of the President of the Italian Republic for the best Ph.D. thesis in the department of Law and Economics at the University of Bonn.
Mr. Kaiser is an adjunct professor for antitrust at U.C. Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. He recently taught Antitrust and the Internet (Spring 2010) and International Antitrust and Policy (Spring 2009). Before relocating from New York to San Francisco in 2008, Mr. Kaiser taught various antitrust and IP-related courses at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York. He regularly publishes in the field of antitrust, law & economics and jurisprudence and is a frequent speaker on a broad range of antitrust and IP issues. Mr. Kaiser is admitted to practice in California, New York, and Germany. He served on the Antitrust and Trade Regulation Committee of the Bar of the City of New York (2005-07) and on the New York State Bar Association's Antitrust Law Section's Executive Committee (2006-07). Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, Mr. Kaiser practiced EU competition law with the Düsseldorf office of Shearman & Sterling.
